NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
 Panther Eyes
Panther Parents,
We need your help!  Many of the phone numbers and e-mail addresses we have in the system no longer work.  If you have changed your phone number(s) or your e-mail address since you filled out your contact information at the beginning of the year, please let the school know.  You can e-mail Maria Sanchez   (msanchez@mckinneyisd.net) and she will make the correction in our computer system.  This information is important so that we can reach you in the event of an emergency.   Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
On March 2nd, I would like to invite parents of current 6th & 7th grade students to attend an informational meeting regarding course selection for the 2010-2011 school year.  This meeting will be held in the Evans cafeteria at 7:00 p.m. and will provide you with information you will need before your student chooses courses for next year.  Traditionally, this event has a low turnout.  When school begins in August, I hear comments such as "I didn't know that."  It will be so much easier if you come to this important informational meeting to learn about courses offered next year before your student selects his/her classes.  Also, coming up on March 11th is Evans Spring Open House.  This is a "come and go" event.  I would encourage you to come and see what great things are happening at your child's school.
As always, if we can be of any assistance, please contact the school.

LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Digital Nation
Watching  the PBS Frontline production of "Digital Nation," I was reminded of one of the major unintended consequences  of our students' constant habit of being "plugged in", either through their computers or cell phones.  Images of teenagers multitasking, some maneuvering three or more devices at once, have made us all shake our heads in amazement.  This is a generation that can do more than one thing at a time!  But, it turns out, that our brains really can't do more than one task at a time, at least not very well.  We are built to do our best work when we can concentrate and think deeply about what we are doing.  Just as research is showing that texting or talking on a cell phone while driving is distracting drivers to a dangerous degree (which we all really knew), research is showing that academic tasks suffer when the person isn't fully concentrating on the task at hand.
Technology is a part of all our lives, but we need to use it wisely.  Students who listen to ipods and chat on line while they are doing their homework are not giving their full attention to the homework, and it is starting to show in academic progress.  This was an excellent program and I urge you to look at the website to see the recent studies on this topic.  As it turns out, to no one's surprise, the best way to learn is to concentrate on one thing at a time without distractions.

Attention Parents of 8th Grade PreAP History Students:
The required book, "Across Five Aprils", is now available for sale in the LMC for $5.99.  You may send cash or check made out to Evans Middle School with your student.  Copies are available now.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF ATHLETIC/P.E. STUDENTS.......
Students in P.E./athletics this semester have been sent home with a letter explaining your rights as a parent to opt your student out of the abstinence education portion of the curriculum this semester.  At the bottom of this letter is a form that must be filled out and sent back to the P.E./athletic instructor if you do not want your child to take part in this lesson.   A copy of this letter follows..........

Dear Parent,
According to state regulations, McKinney ISD is required to create instruction that teaches the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Health. There are specific objectives for each grade level. In choosing the most educationally sound materials for the Growth and Development section, MISD is guided by the School Health Advisory Council and the School Board. As part of the required TEKS, there is a specific section on abstinence education. Only approved materials are used for this instruction.
Because of the sensitivity of the issues, parents have the right to provide this information to their children. You can decide to remove your child from MISD approved instruction in this area. Your signature affirms that you are accepting responsibility for teaching this material and that you will not hold the district responsible for missed curriculum in the future.
Students that are not taking the class will be given appropriate work in other health areas to be completed for a grade.
Sincerely,
Joy Williams

MHS STUCO: "FILL THE BUS"

FILL THE BUS IS NOW IN SESSION AT EVANS MIDDLE SCHOOL!
Fill the Bus is a program benefitting the Title One schools in McKinney by collecting books and other school supplies, including pencils, notebooks, and other materials such as paints (although not paper). The program will run from February 2nd to February 23rd, when buses will go out for the collection of all of the school supplies from the assorted schools. We hope to be able to supply the Title One schools ( Webb, Caldwell, Finch, Burks, and Malvern) with books to replenish their libraries and supplies to   maintain their great programs. MATH HOMEWORK HELP
The EMS Math teachers have doubled their efforts to help your student become successful this year.  If you have received a letter requesting that your student attend tutoring study sessions on specific days, please remind your child to stay after school on those days.  If your student misses a study session, please contact the math teacher.

We have also set up homework help rooms  in each grade level, for the students who need extra help on assignments.  They may be working with another teacher while their teacher is tutoring the study groups.

Our Math Team works well together to meet the needs of your student; nevertheless,  if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Thank you for your continued support!
